Welcome to Verbier, regarded by many as the world’s most prestigious off-piste ski resort. Situated in the south-western region of Switzerland in the Canton of Valais, an area of outstanding natural beauty and home to the ‘Matterhorn’ mountain, Verbier is a traditional alpine village boasting rustic charm and breathtaking scenery. The resort is best known for its chalet-style buildings, art galleries, high-class boutiques and exclusive restaurants providing a truly authentic Swiss holiday experience.
Verbier forms part of the ‘Four Valleys’ ski area along with Thyon, Veysonnaz and Nendaz and together they offer more than 400km of ski runs serviced by 95 modern ski lifts. Verbier climbs from 1800m in the resort, to the dizzy heights of 3300m at the summit of the Mont-Fort Glacier, where you can take in stunning alpine scenery stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. The great thing about Verbier is that there is snow all-year-round, due to the altitude and as such, many pro skiers have set up home in the region. The resort itself caters for everyone, from basic ‘nursery’ runs to the most extreme ‘off-piste’ helicopter drop-sites and glacier skiing, so it’s no wonder they were chosen to host the final leg of the Xtreme Freeride World Tour each year.
If you’re not a skiing or snowboarding enthusiast, fear not, Verbier offers something for everyone! There are many activities to set your pulse racing such as ice climbing, air-boarding and exploring the Alps by bike. There are also numerous health spas, guided snow-shoe tours and husky rides for those who prefer a more relaxed getaway. After a long day’s skiing (or relaxing!) there are scores of bars and nightclubs in which to unwind and party the night away! The ski season generally runs from December to April with New Year and February being the busiest times.
Verbier is a vibrant hub of activity all-year-round thanks to its south-western orientation and diverse culture. When experiencing Verbier in the Summer there are numerous sun terraces perfect for relaxing and taking in the mountain scenery, 400km of hiking and mountain biking trails and a variety of international competitions and festivals. The most anticipated event is the Verbier Festival which was established in 1994 and plays host to some of the greatest names in classical music. The festival features a selection of orchestras, choirs and recitals and is now regarded as one of the most important festivals in Europe! Other must-see spectacles include the Grand Raid Cristalp Mountain Biking Competition and the Grand Concours Hippique Horse Show. There are also many sporting and leisure different activities on offer such as climbing, paragliding, swimming, ice karting and scenic trips aboard the mountain railways.
